“New Delhi, April 27 (PTI) Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today said that Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is working to implement a “comprehensive project” for restoration and rejuvenation of the Yamuna river. He emphasized on rejuvenation of Yamuna and Ganga rivers as a necessity to sustain the Indian civilization. “The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) that reports to my ministry is working to implement a comprehensive plan for restoration and rejuvenation of the Yamuna. The project is named, Asita, which is another name of the Yamuna river,” he said. Referring to the slow degradation of the rivers due to urbanization, the minister expressed satisfaction over revival of focus on rejuvenation of rivers. “We are seeing a revival of focus on rejuvenation of rivers and it is a must. For the Indian civilization in its modern form, we got to rejuvenate the urban space, and the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna and Ganga is at the heart of that,” the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister said. There is no doubt about the “seriousness and resolve” of the government for the purpose of cleaning and rejuvenating the rivers, he said at the launch of a book Yamuna River Project-New Delhi Urban Ecology at an event hosted by the Embassy of Spain. “If you are living in Delhi, I can not think of a more worthwhile cause than cleaning of the Yamuna,” the minister stressed. Ambassador Jose Ramon Baranano said that the Yamuna River Project is a top priority of the embassy of Spain in India. The provost of University of Virginia (US), Thomas Katsouleas, termed the project as a single largest, multidisciplinary study by the university.”
